In Between Seasons

Under(currency) is a permanent public artwork by Cindy Mochizuki created in collaboration with elementary school students, located at the corner of West 41st Street and Cambie Street in Vancouver. It includes an interactive component accessible online in the form of a virtual wishing well.

▷▷I sometimes find myself thinking about ultra-geeky but scientifically accurate generalities, like: music can only exist in space. No space, no sound. So how can a place inspire a music that without it would not exist? In situ composition is a remarkable exercise: imagining music for a specific location — whether a museum, a subway station, or Montreal's modernist buildings — requires a kind of listening, a way of observing spaces that we rarely practice in composition. Music in service of shared places. Bringing a space to life and giving it a voice through sound.
